God calls His people to holiness (1 Peter 1:15-16). But what does the Bible mean when it calls us to forsake sin? What should we do with passages such as Matthew 5:48 or 2 Corinthians 7:1? Can we truly overcome sin? Jesus said that whoever sins is a slave to sin (John 8:34) and yet the Son came to set His people free (Matthew 1:21; John 8:36). We are to be dead to sin (Romans 6:11). We are to be holy as God is holy and without holiness no one will see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14).So how does God make us holy? As disciples of Jesus we understand that we are holy in Christ (Hebrews 10:10, 14) but we also know that the Spirit is empowering us to holiness (Galatians 5:16-17). The Bible even calls the Holy Spirit "the Spirit of holiness" (Romans 1:4). John Wesley seeks to answer what he means by "Christian perfection." Wesley does not mean "sinless perfection" as some suppose. Instead, the Spirit of God helps the child of God to overcome sin. We can be free from sin. Jesus is now our Lord and He is more than able to deliver His people from their sins. Those who teach that we are always slaves to sin ignore the clear teaching of the New Testament.
Overall this is good work. Wesley does a good job of showing what the Bible teaches about God's holiness as well as the holiness of the disciple. While I don't think Wesley was 100% clear on whether sanctification is a second work of grace (he seems to imply this), I do think that the biblical teaching on holiness is very much worth reading and praying about (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24).

Excellent book on the theology of John Wesley, easy read and goes straight to the heart. Many books of theology are very lengthy but Wesley gets it done in a book that shouldn't take long to read. And the great thing about it is that you can read it in less than 3 hours. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Holyness theology.
I'll get straight to the point.
DO NOT BUY THIS EDITION OF "A plain account of Christian Perfection."
This book was a dismal disappointment. It is full of typos, missing words & sentences, and other gobbldeygook that makes reading it a chore and drastically limits one's ability to understand the author's intent.
Why is this book like this? Becuase it was not typed by a human being, but by an automated computer system that scanned in the original book, using software to "read" the letters and generate the text so it can then be printed.
This is explained in the front of the book, but it was NOT made clear here on the page. The "Product Description" here on does mention "This is an OCR reprint. There may be typos or missing text" BUT the "Look Inside" view for this book is NOT from this edition. Do not be misled by the conflicting information on this listing.
Spend a little more and get one of the REAL editions of this book. As I write this, there is another edition from a traditional publisher available on for less than $4 more.
I regret my purchase, and will try to return it. Please don't make the same mistake I made.
John Wesley, a real man of God. Here you will find John Wesley as he explains his doctrine of Christian Perfection. Many attacks were leveled at him for this teaching of his, and here he answers for himself in a well written way. This book is good because even today, much of the same attacks have been leveled against this teaching. Thus, any one at all interested in the formation and defense of this teaching, either side of the aisle, should read this book.

The writing styles from the 1700s makes it a little challenging at times however the content is really good. If you are struggling to understand what Wesley meant by perfection this will help. Simply put if you love God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength and love your neighbor as your self you will cease to sin therefore becoming a perfect christian. It does not mean that we are perfect or not with out temptation or the ability to sin. Any of us can fall when we cease to walk in love toward God or man.
