I must start off by saying do not by the e-book version of this book. It's not properly formatted for Kindle and you'll most likely regret it. However, I returned the e-book and got the hard copy instead. I'm not usually one to write a review on a textbook but this one deserves it. Philosophy can be extremely difficult to read, and even harder to make sense of. What's great about this textbook is that it really breaks down and explains what different Philosophers are saying. It's kind of like the book knows how confused you are, then slowly helps you work your mind around what the text is actually saying. Whether you're taking a Philosophy class or just trying to get into Philosophy in general, I believe this is a great book to start off with. It helps in making the most difficult to read Philosophers, such as Kant, actually make sense. I highly recommend it as a tool for beginning a journey into philosophy.Product details

Needed for class. Philosophy is hard to understand on any level. This book is interactive and does a good job explaining various philosophers viewpoints.
Came without any damage
Just what I needed for my philosophy class. As a student looking for the correct book and item as well as good quality and pricing this was the solution to the search of this book. Book arrived in good quality and shape.
This book is really insightful. The author explains everything in a way which everything makes sense the first read through. It is laid out so that it looks at many of life's questions with different arguments and the perspectives behind those arguments. I found myself thinking, "Ok, I completely agree with this side of the argument only to come to the next chapter and suddenly find myself thinking, "Hmmm, maybe I am actually more on board with this viewpoint instead." I quite often stopped reading just to think and reflect about what I just read and about my own attitude towards life, reality, existence, God, etc...
This book is only a good for referencing any additional information has to be found somewhere else or the internet. The information is basically an outline of various philosophical theory without getting into depth.
I've used other editions of this book to teach my philosophy classes. It is the most complete, clear, thought-provoking philosophy book I've come across, and I read many when choosing one. After I selected the earliest edition about 15 years ago, I've never seen one that looked better. Lawhead includes questions which direct student thinking toward serious reflection on issues in an engaging way. The questions about units led many classes into fascinating discussion and considerations of ways of looking at philosophical issues. I can't say enough about how wonderful this book is or about Lawhead's insights into what matters in philosophy.
Of course, this was a required text for an Intro to Philosophy course I was taking. Overall, it's a pretty decent textbook. I like that it's hardcover and it covers a pretty broad range of philosophers and topics. It does have a LOT of excerpts from famous works, which can get kind of boring and I imagine could be difficult for someone to read who's not interested in philosophy. It would be nice if they put some of the material into more basic terms so that those who are taking the course to just fill a credit could understand it easier. As someone who seriously considered majoring in Philosophy though, it was perfectly fine.
